Ophelia Frump is the cheery, happy, and athletic sister of Morticia Addams.

Biography[]

The Original Addams Family Series[]

She once almost married her brother-in-law, a very reluctant Gomez Addams, when he was promised to marry her in an arranged marriage, which seems to be a tradition in the Addams family. She then fell for Cousin Itt and left Gomez for Morticia. She is very close with her mother, Hester.

The New Addams Family Series[]

In The New Addams Family, she seems to be a bit mean to Morticia, unlike how she was in the original series.

She is also a bit clumsy, breaking a lot of items, and, like Uncle Fester, she can slide up the Fireman's Pole.

Description[]

Except for looking identical, she is nothing like her younger sister.

Personality[]

She is closer to being "normal" because she likes to cook normal food and is often very cheery and upbeat. However, she is a bit moody and can be quite gloomy when sad.

Trivia[]

  • Ophelia was played by Carolyn Jones in the original series and the Halloween special, by Allegra Kent in 1991, by Laura Esterman in 1993, and by Lisa Calder in The New Addams Family.
  • She occasionally appeared in Charles Addams's original cartoons, such as eating with the family, asking her mother if she can borrow the broomstick, or having an ugly young man proclaim his love for her ("There's enough hate in my heart for both of us.").
  • Her appearance in the original television version, at least slightly crazed, bedecked with flowers, and wearing a long dress, is a tribute to her namesake in Shakespeare's Hamlet, who in her madness gathers flowers by the river until she falls in, at which point, weighted down by her sodden dress, sinks and drowns.
  • Although all five of the original series episodes that feature Ophelia were remade for The New Addams Family, Ophelia only appears in the flashback sequences seen in Morticia's Romance Part 1 and Part 2. In the remake of Ophelia Finds Romance, she is replaced by Cousin Melancholia, and in the remake of Ophelia's Career by Cousin Catastrophia. Her character does not appear at all in the episode that took inspiration from Ophelia Visits Morticia.
  • In the 2021 film The Addams Family 2, there is a character named Ophelia Strange.
  • In the Wednesday series, there is a dorm hall named Ophelia.
